Default newbie needs help

Hows it goin everyone !

I'm new here and new to Harley's. I bought my '02 FXDX about 2 weeks ago (only had 1237 miles) , my first Harley. It has SE mufflers and air cleaner/filter, and a rejet.

On to my problem. The bike seems to have an intermitent miss/cough/backfire through carb while I'm cruising at partial throttle. Typically when I'm in 2nd-3rd between 3000-4000 rpm. I checked the jetting today and it is #48 pilot , #190 main and the mixture screw is 2 1/2 turns out. The plugs are still reading lean (very white)

After reading through other posts I tried readjusting the screw and went out to 3 turns but it didn't get any better. It seems as though the jetting should be in the ball park right ? Should I go even bigger on the jets ?Anyone have similar problems ? Any ideas what else it could be ?

Please help as my first experience with Harley's isn't going so well !

Welcome to the Harley Davidson FAMILY!

The best thing to do is have your carb tuned by a shop with a dyno. Ask some riders in your area who the best is. Have it tuned, then don't mess with it. ( Untill you start changing things like cams, pipes and so on.....!)

The bike is supposed to have a "stage 1" kit , I did not install these parts it came like that. So after my research I'm wondering if it could be the needle ? Shims ? get a new one ? The bike idles fine and runs fine when I'm on the gas. It's seems to give me the most trouble when its cold outside and I'm just cruising @ partial throttle or after rolling off and gently accelerating again.

Sounds like a lean condition.
Odd that it would be lean with a 48 pilot, but I'd try a 50.
