Default Lifter problems please help

I'm X I have a 03 1200 Sportster. I dumped the bike back in April during a bad wind storm. I was fine but the bike had a lot of scratches. I got the bike put back together yesterday and it has a lot of valve noise. I checked the push rods and lifter tappets. One lifter is stiff and the other is springy. I went to the local HD shop and bought a new lifter but that one is also stiff. I can't tell which one is good and which one is bad. I don't have adjustable rods. I need some advice. I changed out the one lifter that was springy w/ a new one. I took the bike out after I put it back together. It started knocking out of both heads and it was smoking a bit. Does anyone have any advise for my I'm stuck?
