Anyone know of an easy way to remove rear axle bearings from a 1950 servi-car rear? Ive heard you can use heat but want to hear some input so i dont damage my axles.
I do not, but wondering if you have a Service Manual for your bike? Lots of good info in the "Yellow" Book. Hopefully John or someone else will jump in with a complete answer. Good luck.
my problem is getting the bearing (38) off of (36) on left side and (38) off of (28) on the right side. can i heat up the ends of (36) and (28) to slide them off?
And thanks for going downstairs and getting that manual. i had one at one time. also 45 restorations .com is a good place for flathead parts. i got my replacement bearings there and they have the exploded view also with the parts numbers. If i remember correctly, back in the day guys heated up the shaft with a torch to remove the old bearings. i was hoping one of those guys could tell me if thats the way to get them off or if there is another way.once again, thanks for going downstairs. i know how far that is...lol
Give 45 Restoration a call and talk to Warren, if he doesn't know he is good at sending you in the right direction. But he probably has the answer. Good luck.
while that is not a novis job you seem handy - the 36 bearing is pressed on the 38 stub and its tight are you sure they are bad normally its 14 and 35 are bad
what made you chase this
also just so you know that 45 store sells nothing but V Twin parts marked up == NO matter what they tell you on the phone - we see it all the time customers bring in parts still in the boxes from V Twin - the bearings you have coming will be Chinese's and not USA like what's in it for 75 years - you will be lucky if they actually fit
just so you know we use the original bearing number and order an SKF of similar made in a real country by quality machinest - not slave peasants in a mud floor hut
the original problem was a tire wobble on the left side after putting a new set of tires on. the first thing i thought of was bad bearings. i completely disassembled the rear end. used a puller on the left bearing and just bent the bearing up.so now i have to change it. upon inspection of the left axle, its missing 2 teeth and the 2 half moon rings are worn pretty bad . i have called around and looked on the net for a left side, long, 26 1/2 inch axle. haven't found one yet. if anyone has info where i can get a left axle, i'd appreciate it.
