The question regarding which octane grade is the right one to use is a very close 2nd right behind "What's the best oil to use?". I guess that no one ever reads their Owners Manual any more or they manage to become "Internet blind" and completely forget how to use a search engine once they join a Forum.

I have been running 87 E10 for the past decade in my H-D collection of bikes from 74 and 80 cu. in Evos and TC's from the 88 to 120's. All without a single running issue.
I do add oil coolers to the ones that did not come with them, use iridium plugs and a power AFR instead of an emission compliant AFR. I also do a carbon cleaning every 2 to 3K.
In that time I have ran them over 300K.
All vehicles sold in the US to run on public roads are mandated by the government to be able to run on 87 octane. H-D can only recommend higher octane they can not and do not require the use of higher octane.
Some argue that they can only follow H-D recommendations on octane. However they fail to understand that most use other brands of oil, tires, seats and a myriad or other aftermarket parts all the while H-D only recommends their branded licensed parts.
H-D recommendations serve their interests and not the end users interests.

I use the ethanol free which is available in the town I live in. The highest ethanol free available right now is 89, but sometimes it's 87. It runs great in my 10 Ultra and I can't tell any difference between it and the 91 octane. The ethanol free seems to provide better gas mileage but I haven't verified the numbers. I also use e-free 87 octane when 89 e-free is not available and can't tell any difference between it and the 93 octane ethanol fuel that wal-mart sells at Murphy's. The twin cams seem to be happy with just about any fuel 87 and up octane.
