As many of you know, I am new to the Harley community.

I have convinced myself that I need a vest, but truth is, I have no idea why.
Vests do seem to be standard Harley attire.
Is it for warmth? Safety? in place of a leather jacket?

I was only kidding about my previous comment (no idea why..)
I plan to get a vest to wear over my leather jacket at night.
My plan is to get a reflective patch for the vest so I am more visible at night.. But don't want to wear HARLEY gear all day and night if you know what I mean.. So I figure a vest would be good for night rides over my flat black jacket..

But my question is, why do you all wear vests?

Actually, I hate the damn things. I don't think I'll ever buy one, but that's just my opinion.

I guess people wear them because they are not nearly as hot as a jacket and provide at least a little protection if you dump it. Better that a t-shirt anyway.

 

I got a vest for two reasons. The pockets and a place to put my patches. Ok..3rd reason...I look damm hot in it.

I wear one. I hate patches so it's plain. I mostly use it for the pockets and to keep the wind off my torso.

 

I know there will be some tempers over this one, but here goes......

I think it is for the people wanting to bring out their "inner Village People" out.

Just kidding.. Down here in So FLa there are alot of people who wear them without shirts on under them. It really reminds me of a bad Right Said Fred video.
I mean do you wear chaps without pants? (Honestly....only when my wife makes me)

I think they are excellent for keeping wind off your torso, So during hot weather I can understand why people would wear them. They just dont help out from getting a wind burn on your arms.

 

I wear a vest for the following reasons:

1) 2 front pockets without having to wear a full jacket

2) Keeps some of the wind off of my chest, and since it's black, it retains heat from sunlight and keeps me a little warm in the cooler months before it's cold enough for a full leather jacket

3) If you do dump the bike, the leather will provide a small amount of protection - better than just a t-shirt

4) It's a good place for me to put my military patches and a Harley patch...and the patches I bought are also reflective so they also have a safety function

5) Because I like wearing a vest...


I'd say those are good enough reasons...

PS - You will NEVER see me wearing a leather vest with no shirt on underneath it...that's just not going to happen. PERIOD.
