You don't have it adjusted properly.

It's the clutch adjustment, maybe not the cable. Go on youtube and watch clutch adjustments. Usually, biggest problem is most do do not get the burrs off the adjuster screw and the think they are at no play when the do back off at the clutch. That way, there is too much slack to pull in clutch that breaks apart the drive and driven disks. They also tend to stick anyway. We can talk you thru this but first study so you have it in your head how it works. Soft tails, Dynas and Big cruisers are the same. Sportys are opposite but work similar. Also make sure you have a stock clutch. Do not try to compare apples and oranges.

Does the cable or and clutch need adjusting? Do you have a repair manual? You could enter your year and model on you tube and enter clutch adjustment.

Not really understanding what you are saying other than you pulled the clutch, dropped it into first and it jumped forward. I cant tell if your are saying you replaced the cable and then it did this or if it just did this out of the blue.

Sounds like your clutch is not adjusted to me, you can't just put an new cable on and not adjust it

how much 'jump' are we talking about here? if your clutch fluid is cold, there is a certain amount of 'stiction' in the plates and your bike will jump forward just a little when you put it in gear. it's only a slight jump, not continuous like your clutch is still engaged, your brake should have no problem holding it, and is completely normal.

Nothing, it's a common issue. The clutch plates stick together if they've sat engaged for a while.
Just give it a couple more seconds. Now you know it does it, you'll be ready the next time.
