When my gas light comes on, it's around 30-35 miles. BUT...when I fill it up, I usually put in 3.5 gallons or so. With a 5 gallon tank and getting 45 mpg average, something's not right.

if you are getting 45mpg, that sounds about right. are you doing the math to figure mpg ( miles ridden since last fill divided by gallons the next fill) ?
Does the 2009 heritage softail classic have a reserve. I don't seem to be getting good fuel economy.
Personally, I wouldn't go by the fuel light coming on in determining your fuel economy. Do it the old fashioned way, it's much more accurate. Just out of curiosity, how many mpg are you getting?
My idiot light comes on sometimes when the gauge reads 3/4 full. I don't trust the gas gauge and use the trip meter. When trip meter reads about 200 miles, time to fill up.
