Harley ESP 72k miles long term results
I bought my o8 bones in 2012 with 3200 miles on her got the 5 year esp
because i had a bad feeling about how much it had just sat..... and i ride a little more than the average guy.
Well shes at 72 k miles now. The 5 years is almost up. (I bought another bike and it's taken the load off her this year)
I just did a quick look over the paperwork the other night to see how i fared and because my bike is in the dealers hands for repair again.
I paid 2900 for the esp that included wheel and tire.
Rough adding i rounded down to the nearest hundred and added up the bills i
still have 2yrs worth lost in my last move.
I have tickets for over 3600....
So with whats being done now i'm certainly coming out ahead.
The caveat to that is if your willing to work on your own scoot
probably never cost effective. If you don't ride much no way is it worth it unless you have horrible luck.
Being repaired now....
Steering head/ neck bearings second time
rocker arm bearings for springer front end
voltage regulator second time for this too
oil tank line
stator plug
I'm not a wrench i can do the easy stuff.
Debating renewing the ESP or just paying as i go from now on.
While she still actually runs strong i think odds of engine issues are likely in the next 5. With the way other small things fail if they covered the engine i would come out way ahead.
Eta $3400 for 5 more years wheel & tire included.

if you aren't within the renewal window, and you hit 75,000 miles, you won't be able to renew your esp for longer. I can't remember if the window is 30 days, 60 days, or what? so you better check with the dealer if you think you might want to renew it.

I have a 4k+ mile trip starting in 3 weeks though so if i'm gonna do it i gotta do it really quick.
I'm debating what to do since the lowrider is basically my daily ride now.
But the yearly big trips will be on the bones.

At this point you might be better off putting $3400 in a savings account, and if you need something repaired, use that account. I believe the ESP is an ok option, if you ride alot, and by alot I mean 15000-20000 miles a year, but if someone is doing just a couple thousand a year, the savings thing may be smarter. Yes I know mileage doesn't always equal repairs, but it sure increases the odds. I didn't buy the esp in my 16 yet, but I had it on my 09, which I bought used. It paid for itself on the 09....when you figure what the dealership charges per hour, but doing it yourself, if you can, may have been cheaper overall. I wrench on my Jeep, but haven't taken on the Harley yet.

That's a lot of money, but I do all my own work, except last fall when I was on a trip and my charging system went. Stator, and voltage regulator, just shy of 1k. You're about due for your stator to give out if you are still on the original one. Something to consider, might be worth it for you.
