I recently bought my first Harley. 2008 Ultra Classic, lotsa extras on it. I put a new battery in it and every now and again while idling or going slow through town the check engine light comes on. Yesterday while riding through town the CE light and the Battery light came on. Stopped at a gas station came out started it up and both were off for the rest of the ride. Does this sound like I need to check voltage regulator and stator?

Well I had a similar condition and after reading about the difficulty and expense of changing out the stator I decided to upgrade the voltage regulator first since it's more of a plug and play replacement.

After reading many reviews I decided on a Cycle Electric regulator.
I got mine off e-bay for I think around $120 or so.
Haven't seen a check engine light since.

Was it my OEM regulator was going out or it just was not able to regulator an intermittent stator?
I'm not sure but it doesn't matter to me as long as all is well.

Check all the wire connections good . Also keep a eye on your voltmeter when your it stop lights to see if it has the geeters. And I would then do what bluraven said start with replacing the ragulator .
It might also be your start switch on the tank going bad. Which I don't see on your bike .

Maybe the check engine light is triggered by low voltage conditions. My 2007 sometimes would idle down around 700 rpm and the voltmeter then would read around 11 volts. Idling normally at 1000 rpm, the voltmeter would never drop below 12 volts. I wouldn't worry about it other than check the idle position on the throttle. Do the 3 times on and off ignition/kill switch to reset the throttle.

OP, welcome to the forum from central Texas.

If you elect to check your charging system before purchasing parts that may or may not fix your problem, read the two "Sticky" threads pertaining to the charging system at the top of the electrical subforum.

Thanks a bunch, will definitely start with checking the wires for loose connections and thanks for the link to the sticky, that helped a lot.
