I hear more whining about 5th gear on this forum than I do when I actually engage it.

I would imagine it doesn't whine because it's a helical-cut gear???

If I remember correctly I believe that the reason that people hear 5th gear is because it IS NOT helical-cut so it actually does sound different than the restof the gears because it is.

Straight cut gears will make noise period. It is just inherant to the design. Besides, if you have done your job right, then your pipes should cover the noise just fine!

I guess if Harley had done their job right then you wouldn't have to mask the noise. I also would guess then if you had a child screaming in the bedroom and you have the TV or stereo loud enough then you wouldn't hear them, no noise, no problem. JMHO

Well I didnt mean to make it sound like it was the consumer's fault at all, but it is just something that comes with using staight cut gears. Id like to think that HD used them for a REASON, not just because it was cheaper for them.

I have been up to 5th on my bike and with stock everything I can say that I haven noticed any whine.
