That said, for me, the Evo is the last of the proper HD engines. I think you can draw a straight line from the Knucklehead designed by Mr. Harley himself, straight through the Pans and Shovels, then into the Evo. The Evo can be reasonably described as a Knucklehead after 50 years of incremental refinement. They broke that line with the twin cam. They had their reasons (many of which were imposed by the EPA), but it is what it is.

My 04 has 50K and all original. Runs and sounds like new. Other then alternator rotor stipped the spline from an abrupt stop from abuse, nothing has been changed on the motor. Sure if it was flogged as some people drive them, it would have problems by now. I am sure the cam chain tensioners should be replaced from age but they are not worn out. Primary is noisy from the chain having uneven wear that make odd uneven noise at idle but that hurts nothing. Done that since 20K when rotor stripped.

I'm on my third Twinkie.
My first (an 88 punched out to 95) was wonderful in the 650-lb Deuce frame. Had gear driven S&S cams, fully "stage IV' treatment, and made 100HP/100lb-ft at the rear wheel. Didn't burn or leak a drop of oil.
My second was a 2010 Limited with the non-HO 103. Once I got it properly tuned and the header de-catted, it ran much cooler. It wasn't a race bike, but it pulled adequately for a touring bike. Didn't burn or leak a drop of oil.
My current is a 2016 Road Glide with the HO 103. Noteably more agreeable than the 2010, even stock. Now, with cams, putting down 92HP/110lb-ft, it is a dream. At 22,000 miles, it doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. Doesn't transfer oil, doesn't sump. Heat is still a little bit of an issue for the passenger on really hot days, but all in all.... I frickin' love this bike and have no desire to "upgrade" until this one is less fun.
