Default "The Crash" regarding bike values

One fellow mentioned "the crash" to describe values of used Harleys going down in price. When was this crash period?

I noticed it in 2015. But I have noticed the used market is starting to pick up with Harley holding fast to MSRP 30K to 50K touring bike prices.

Started right around 2009 when the "Great Recession" hit

It's just that all motorcycle values, including Harley's, haven't ever really fully recovered.

Disposable income for nonessentials just ain't what it used to be.

- When did the fellow say prices crashed? I cant picture a discussion of prices crashing without any dates being mentioned.
- I know of no credible source of used Harley value trends.
- Unless someone has this data, all replies will be conjecture. Even if they have info on a specific dealer.
- NEW unit sales volumes and trends are available for HD and the entire motorcycle industry by using google.
- I think used sales volumes will track with new unit volumes.
- When there is abrupt drop in sales volumes PRICES will be pressured.
- If Im right, that would be soon after around 2006.

- Who cares when it happened?

The "crash" started in 2003 with the overproduction of "Anniversary" models. Then HD followed it up by cheapening major components and increasing manufacturing tolerances.

They also kept the product about the same for a long time. Untill about a year ago the dynas and softails were about the same for like 20 years. That floods the used market.

It's a depreciating assest, it will go down a little every day. Oh, and all those thousand's of $$$ you sunk in making it faster, shinier, cooler....well that stuff is worth about zero after you install it. I do it too!

This. Looking back, history will record the late ‘80’s-early ‘90’s as an anomaly caused by a perfect storm of aging baby boomers deciding that a new Harley was a “must have” combined with limited production capacity. Unfortunately many still cling to the idea of the “good old days” when you could buy a new Harley, ride it a few teasers and sell it at a profit.

I've been considering buying a second bike to ride locally, an EVO. Prices show it's a buyer's market. I figure I might as well take advantage of current market trends.
