It should be legal everywhere. My journey times would be almost doubled if i couldn't lane-split. Loud pipes really help, most cars hear me coming and move over to give me more space.

Just curious, have you ridden a motorcycle in the Houston and surrounding area? Been on I-10 or I-59 in Houston? In rush hour traffic?

The cagers would go out of their way to make you crash if you tried to lane split on them here...just sayin'.

Good luck and may the force be with you....................

Even if legal, there are some roads in N Tx that I wouldn't consider lane splitting on...
LJB freeway across the N Dallas corridor for one.

It would take some getting used to by me as a rider and the cars/trucks in traffic for sure. I hope it passes and then I'll choose to use it or not to use it. Seems like lane splitting could get a bad name from the people that abuse it (big shocker there right?!). This is written for 5mph over the congested traffic when traffic is 20mph or less.

thanks for the post on this GalvTexGuy.

Add 610 Loop. I try to stay off those in rush hour with a bike.

I lived in CA for a short time, where I had a Ninja 636. I swore I would never lane split, but then I got more comfortable, and decided to try it. You have to be smart about doing it. There is a right way (low speed) and a wrong way (high speed).

Flash forward about 8 years and I was on a ride from CO to ride the PCH from S to N. When we hit the CA boarder you could clearly tell who was from CA and who wasn't. Anyone who lived in CA (with CA plates) cleared off the line so we (there were 5 bikes) could roll down the center of the lanes without obstruction. There was an accident ahead that had traffic backed for 3-4 miles, we save, probably 2 hours of time sitting in traffic by lane sharing. Anyone who didn't have a CA plate, would crowd the line and try to prevent us from going by.

There will always be an adjustment period when lane sharing (splitting, whatever) is allowed for the first time. Be smart and you'll be fine. Hawaii has a new law in place (trial basis only , for now) that allows them to ride the shoulder when traffic is under 15 mph. It has to be at least two lanes in the same direction, IIRC. I like that a lot.

Looks like the CA transplants are taking in effect. I would say yes with Lane sharing. The state just has to do some type of campaign saying how lane sharing is LEGAL any make everyone aware of this.

I would love to have that option here in NC. Not that I have to deal with traffic very often in my current commute but I used to deal with stop and go traffic daily that would turn my 45 minute commute into 1 hr 45 minutes. Being able to lane split would have sped things up for sure. I have done it a few times in a pinch (as in traffic has accident backed up on a really hot day or stop and go for so long my clutch hand is getting hard to work the clutch) but tried to do it as safely as possible.

+1 I would want a campaign letting other drivers know that it is legal and to try to leave room for bikes. Most people probably wouldn't pay attention but if you could get the knowledge out there it would be helpful
