Are there pieces of metal in the red squares?

I would be replacing it, whether Dunlop pays or not. Ever had a flat at speed? it isn't a laughing matter

Replace it. Especially if you wide with your better half. You may want to risk your life, but not theirs.

I had a Dunlop split down in the tread on the VLX, only had around 500 miles on it. It was just before the 4th of July and I had planned on doing some riding over the holiday, ruined my plans..

Replace it!

Replace it or you may go out of this world like you came in, on a busted rubber.... A bit of hummer to a serious thread.

I'd say that was a defective tire. It doesn't look like you ran over anything because the crack is in a valley of the tread. Seems like there would be damage on the tread itself if you ran over something.

If you ride on that, you'll always be worried about it.
Stress kills.
