I sometimes switch between them. Use the heel shifter for a while and then upshift with toe. Usually during the same ride. I like having the option.

When I bought my Softail, I figured I'd take the heel shifter off. First I decided to give it a try for a couple of days. By the time I got home from the dealer, I decided I liked it. 25 years later, I still do.
That's my story also. Bought a new '13 Road Glide, first bike with foot boards and a heel shifter. Figured the first thing I would do would be to remove the heel shifter. But by the time I got the new RG home (125 miles LOL) I was used to the heel shifter and I like it.
When my toe shifter wore out the splines on the shaft, I was glad to have the heel shifter as backup. It wasn't convenient, but it got me through the Big Horn mountains until I got somewhere that I could fix it.
Thanks for all the great feedback guys! Based on what I'm hearing, I think I'll try it out for a couple weeks and if I don't get used to it or like it, I'll take that sucker off.
I don't use the heel shifter, but I left it on. I once had a Gout attack, and it was less painful to use the heel shifter. It also comes in handy as a reference where my foot is, without looking.
