FALSE!!! They busted my ***** on a 2012 bike, in 2015.
FALSE! Digital speedo on newer Sportys
TRUE!!!
Remember, it's not what you know, it's what you can prove. All they'll see is a ****-ton of miles put on in a year.
One thing to keep in mind though, make damn sure your old speedo goes OVER the mileage they record on the title during your tenure of ownership.

I purchased a motorcycle from out of state before. It had a little over 7500 miles on it at the time so I was OK in this regard. I remember taking the bike in for inspection and the person matched up the VIN number with the engine number. I was worried they would notice the aftermarket non-street legal exhaust...but the bike passed.
One thing I would highly suggest. Make sure you get two bills of sales. One, with the correct price and one much less.
California will try and rape you on taxes. Think I paid close to 2 grand in taxes on the bike for being honest.
Lesson learned.

I like Fat's suggestion the best. If government bureaucracy wants to make things ridiculous, then we have the right to do a work around.

Question for the California crew regarding registration of an interstate bike.
I recently purchased a 2000 Sporty from NY with 4000 miles on it, I'm currently unable to register it because it doesn't have the CA standard emissions label required of all bikes under 7500 miles. My options are not looking good but figured id ask the question if anybody has advice that may help. Thanks in advance.

I had to do this with my '09 Rocker in 2014, luckily the women at DMV doing the vin check was super cool and told me about the 7500 mile rule and the work around. She said she was supposed to flag the vin so it could never be registered in Ca., but instead told me to go in and register the bike, and when told I needed to bring it for vin check, to ask for a temporary registration....I had to put 2500 miles on it, and had no problem doing it in 30 days.

They don't care about emissions either, you don't even have to start the bike. They just look at the VIN on the frame, the mileage (turn bike on to show digital speedometer, and yes they know the difference between the ODO and the TRIP selection), and the engine serial number, both of which are now going to be branded on your title.
Seriously, trust me. I turned over 4 motorcycles in three years in that God forsaken penny-pinching state, one of which I was dealing with getting a new engine serial number on my title when I just gave up and moved to FL.
