Time for Maintenance - do I do the Primary or not?
I did the 1,000 mile service myself. Changed all three holes because that's what the salesman told me to do. Everything else I followed the service manual.
Now it's time for the 5k service. Flipping through the owner's manual I don't find any reference to changing the primary oil in the maintenance schedule. Just says to check primary chain adjustment.
Transmission says to do in 10k intervals.
So????? What's the consensus? Change the primary oil or not?

Nate,I change the primary each time I change engine oil @ 5 k miles....There are a lot of moving parts in the primary and I feel for another 10 bucks I can give them the best chance to survive.....I do the tranny every 10 k....I use Bel ray in primary and trans...Amsoil in the crankcase...JMO

you missed it in the manual. it says to change the primary every 10k and the transmission every 20k. but you have to figure out what works for you. me personally, i do the engine and primary every 5k. there is a lot of crud in the primary from the clutch plates so why not get it out of there? however, the transmissions are pretty stout, so i don't change the oil in there but every 20k as suggested by the manual. in a manual car, you can go 100k before changing the oil, so i figure 20k isn't gonna hurt.
i will mention that i used shell rotella t in my primary and 75w90 gear oil in the tranny of my last bike. but due to the oil migration issue on the m8, i'm currently using formula + in both the tranny and primary. once i am confident that i don't have oil migration, then i'll start using different oil.
