Default Did I over fill fuel tank?

Just ran an errand and filled the tank. May have topped of a little more than usual, fuel was full to just over fill neck and into cap well. Another 5 min. ride and stop for 30 min. Upon returning I saw a small puddle under bike. Couldn't see anything dripping. fired up and rode 5 min. home. After investigating I discovered fuel would spurt out, just in front of rear tire, when run switch is turned on to pressurize tank.
Looking in manual it appears fuel tank vent line dumps near that location, although I can't see it. It appears to stop after approx. 1/4 cup of fuel spurting out.
Is this due to overfilling tank and excess fuel being expelled? or something else going on?

The Run switch activates the fuel pump and pressurizes the fuel system between the fuel pump and the throttle body. The gas tank is vented in order to keep it from becoming pressurized.

Yep, done it a couple of times myself. I keep a small 2 gallon gas can at the house to keep the tank topped off, I've filled the tank when it was cool out and when the temps climbed up I got a small puddle of gas under the bike. First time I was like WTF, then it dawned on me what I'd done.

I always stop filling when the fuel nozzle's auto shut off stop kicks in.

Thanks for all the input. Yes, it was overfill. took a ride to burn off some fuel, no more fuel puddles.
This was the first time I've seen that so I was also saying WTF!
Lesson learned, don't fill past the neck, even a little bit!

Thanks for the correction, yes, I misspoke, the fuel system is pressurized, not the tank.

Gasoline has a tendency to expand as it's temperature rises. The gasoline was in the ground, where the temp doesn't rise/fall very much. When it's transferred to your tank, the sun hits it and warms it up slightly. IF you fill it to the brim, the heated up expanded fuel has got to go somewhere. If you had a California bike (that was stock,) then it would have gone into the charcoal canister. But, since you have a 49 State bike, it dumps on the floor. Just be happy your gas fired water heater didn't find those fumes before you did...

In the future, you can fill it to the brim, but you've got to ride it right away. Like if you're traveling. Filling it to the brim does increase your fuel range slightly, so there's that.
