Default First new HD

Bought my first new Harley from Dale's modern cycle in San Bernardino CA from Mr Peters in 1979. Paid cash for it in mostly $5s and $10s, $5500 OTD. Rode the crap out off that bike, miss those days. Oh ya it was a Super Glide.

I bought a 1985 Electra Glide and paid $6600 for it OTD. I rode it for eight years and 32,000 miles, and sold it for $11,000. The guy acted like he was happy to get it that cheap. Those were the days of the two year waiting lists.

I bought a 2001 FLHT standard for just a tad under $13,000 out the door. This was at the old Dudley Perkins store in San Francisco. All I remember about it was that it didn't have enough horsepower to pull the skin off a chocolate pudding.

Man, Harleys looked so much better back then. Sure do miss the Dyna look.

I paid around $3,200 for my new XLCH in '78.

I bought mine in 1989 or 1990. I was 18 and the Sporty was 10. It had been sitting for a couple years and was partially disassembled.
But it was still in very good condition. It ran pretty good when it ran but it had a lot of electrical gremlins which is why I decided to sell it. It seemed like I worked on it as much as I rode it.

Back in the EVO days, there was so much demand for Harleys that they couldn't keep up. Needless to say, bikes were priced way over MSRP. A buddy of mine wanted to buy a Sportster. The asking price was 3k over MSRP. He told them he would pay full retail but no more. The sales guy said no way. You're just going to flip the bike for a profit. My buddy said he just wanted to ride it and wasn't going to resell. The sales guy says I get my money up front; not budging on price. My buddy said FU and walked.

Back in those same days, I was so broke I could barely afford gas. I used to hide around the service door and stalk the mechanics. When one walked out i would ask questions on whatever issue I had with the ironhead. Great bunch of guys.

And, yes, I had to wait in line for 2-3 months to get the '92 FLHS. Only got it after that wait because the guy who had the deposit on it changed his mind, and the salesman called me and said "I've got a new Red one here available, do you want it?", and I got in there as fast as i could!
Had a buddy ( Tall Paul 6'6" ) who had a 1992 FLHS ( sport ) .. It was red too
