And don't forget that Lewis and Clark lost a man to a hail stone just east of the Badlands.
Hail can be ferocious out here, Friday evening we had a severe weather warning playing the "alert" on the radio forecasting 2" hail near Bell Fouche. The warning said "seek shelter and expect loss of livestock". We only saw smaller than quarter size but it sounded like it was coming through the roof. Look a the hailstone in this link - that would take you out.
I've lost track of the number of times I've ridden I-90 from Sioux Falls to Rapid City. By and large South Dakota seems to do road construction right. Traffic keeps moving at a good pace unless there's an accident in a construction zone.
I have found that often times a lot of gas stations on routes other than interstate 90 are closed on Sunday and not open late in the day, best to keep fueled up.
Turn right at Interior and go through the Badlands up to Wall. There's a fee, but it's worth it, and then you have a paid 7-day pass you can use in Custer also.
Thanks, as I suspected. I've traveled to and from Sturgis via I90 quite a few times, I have range anxiety on it as it is.
Back in the days before 24 hour pumps I ran out on the way home from Sturgis once on I-90, another time I had to sleep next to the pump before the station opened.
I was young and dumb. Still dumb, no longer young.
