interstate 90 South Dakota
Just came back to NJ from Sturgis to spread some ashes , rode the bike both ways 4,000 miles , RT 90 is 4 lanes ,then cross over to 2 lanes many times ,due to massive road construction . they are grinding the old concrete on site THE DUST is rediculis ! Bridges are also being redone . Plan some extra travel time . I was told it is a 2 year project . No sense in cleaning the bike till you get to rapid city or sturgis , then hose it off first , the sand and concrete dust will scratch the hell out of it . Also the new FULL THROTTLE SALOON IS A MUST SEE !!!! T bar top and stools are made from gears , sprockets , and more sockets than you can count !! Nothing like the old one . Enjoy the rally , will be there next year !!!!

They have always been working on that road. At least since '86 when I first went. Just something you deal with. In general, if you can't do 90MPH across I90, you'll get crushed. Even motor homes towing trailers on the 2 lane parts with nothing between you and the oncoming traffic but orange cones does 90.
Have phun, it's worth the ride.

It’s almost 1500 miles of highway lanes from Sioux Falls to Sturgis.
With that many miles if the weather is allowing, there’s going to always be maintenance on that stretch of road.
If you got the time there is a really nice track going across southern South Dakota/northern Nebraska up through Pine Ridge and the Badlands.
My Son and I have taken that route a couple of times in the past, and it was a really enjoyable ride but plan on 1.5 days to make that run.
If time is an issue, the only way to get across South Dakota is I90 and just simply be careful and deal with the construction.

Sturgis is a month away. A lot can change by then, and they often suspend work during the rally.
If you're worried about it, take Rt. 44 from the east. It runs parallel to 90 about 20 miles south.
One thing about that. Make sure to stay topped off on gas, and that your bike runs good. Not a place to break down.
I always go that way.
