How far back does the "Solid Rear Spoked Front" wheel style go? Where did it come from?

87-94 FXLR's had a solid disc rear wheel and a 21" spoke front wheel. They were the first model to be equipped with 39mm forks.

I've seen pictures of knucklehead Bonneville bikes that had those, so probably 30's or 40's for those and clearly not a factory option.
