My experience with the stock Dunlop, fronts 12,000 or so, rears, maybe 9,000-10,000, like you said, depends on the riding style, speed, etc. Just replaced the rear on my '04 FXD with a Metzler 880, had 7,000 miles on it and there's still a bit of tread left.
I've used Avon Roadrunners ever since I found out just how slippery the (boycoted) Dunlops are that come with the bike . A word to the wise... If you ride enough use tires that'll get you out of wet road situations, i.e. Avon and Metzler. You'll get less miles before you have to change them but you'll get home safer when you get caught in the rain.
I get about 8,000 miles rear, 15,000 miles front on the Avons before I've got to change them. Hope this is helpful.

I 100% agree. Dunlop tires do suck. I run Avon Venom-R tires, Ill never go back to Dunlops. Superior wet and dry traction. I get about 10k out of mine. I always change the front and rear tires out together.

no probs either with my dunlops..11K on the rear- - had it changed because it was getting pretty thin - -almost see the air in it! The front looks like it can go another 5k easily ---
now it's the brakes next - -I think I'll be doing the rear first - -although the techs said I have 70% remaining - -(I have 11.5K miles now)
