By seven or eight they should be mature enough to obey riding instructions. Short rides first, around the block, etc., to make sure they understand the need to sit still and be aware. Helmet is required, even if your state doesn't require it, and riding gear that you can assemble. Should be a wonderful experience for the kids...it was for mine. Get ready to enjoy it.

I took my six month son riding in a special seat with seat belt. Caught a lot of criticism for that, and probably deserved. Both my boys grew up around motorcycles, and the oldest rides a Honda something today. The other is presently without a bike, but rode Gold Wings for years.

This summer, my 12 year grandson is flying out from Texas to visit Grandpa, and then I will take him home to Fort Worth on the Ultra. It was his mother's idea. It will be great, and a great memory for him too. Looking forward to that.

 

Kids under 18 DO NOT have to wear a helmet in every state. I think most of them though

 

Don't know about "every state", but it is in California. I would do it just because the kids are precious.

 

My daughter started riding with mearound 8 yrs old. Keep the trips short, warmand safe.

 

Girls 10-13... Boy about 8.

I doesn't what age you start them at, you'll mess them up for the rest of their life. My son started riding with me when he was 1. He will be 27 June 1st, and he is still nutz about scoots. When he started riding I had to put a belt around his waist and the back rest on my old FLH. He's now a cop and still love to ride. My daughter started riding with me at 1, also. She was killed in 2001 in a car wreck at the age of 17. She was killed on Tuesday and she and I rode on the Saturday and Sunday before her death. I wouldn't take anything for that weekend.

yeah... that sucks.

on the one hand you must be telling yourself "f*** her... what's she gonna do? ..take away my birthday?"

but on the other hand you want to teach your son not to disrespect his mothers wishes. puts him in a tough spot.

i had my share of ridiculous situations with ex-wife, but not that one. Her point of safety for the kid is validated by many others though.
