i know this has been kicked around way to many times,but now it is me. stopped at dealer to ask service mgr. how much it cost for the 1000mi. service. he give me the price and i stupidly ask how much it would be if i supplied the fluids. he asked what i was planning to use,told him mobil 1,he looked me right in the eye and said 'you that will void your harley-davidson factory warranty'.
so,before i embarrass myself further,what is the real deal. thanks (hi brian)

 

you voided your warnt'y by simply asking the mech. that question!

 

It is amazing the amount of **** some of these dealers will throw at a customer. As long as the oilhas the mininum specs of the manufacturer, there is no way they can void the warranty. There is a law prohibiting this.Do a search...most everyone on this forum uses either Mobil 1, Amsoil, or Royal Purple. The last HD branded oil in my bike was installed at the 1000 mile service, since then, it has been Mobil1 V-twin 20w-50, and ocassionally I will use Amsoil, whichever is the easiest to get at the time.

 

It won't void your warranty. service manager is mistaken.

 

Look up Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act on Wikipedia. That is the law that you are protected under to use whatever oil you choose as long as it meets the minimum requirements by H-D.

 

Tell him he should be reading H-D's own publication "The Enthusiast"...

couple of months ago it clearly stated that H-D "would not and could not" void a warranty based on your using other than H-D fluids...what a dumbass...

 

My dealer installed Mobil1 at my requestin all 3 on my 1k service

 

He's lying....I'd tell them you know better. Like *Night Train* saidit was stated in in the HOG magazine last year.

Otherwise have him show you the specific entry in th warrenty that says the warrenty will be voided for using any other oil. It must be specifically stated, no a general round about statement. They will take you evey time if you let them.

Just go through the dealers trash cans, get all the HD synthetic empty plastic containers you can get, take them home and pour Mobil 1 in them then return to the dealer.... bet no one could tell a difference... even you!
