Default new to six speed- question

As a rider of older harley's (84 ironhead) and a (90 fxr) a four speed and a five speed, I just bought an 07 softail standard. could I please get a few comments on what mph you are shifting at one thru six and also if you feel the need to be in sixth gear much around town. Your input is appreciated. thanks in advance- Pirate

Your owner' manual gives approximate shift speeds. I shift from first to second at 25, then 35, 45, 55 and sixth at 70. These can be much higher on up to rev limiter depending on how much you want to get on it.

I usually go into 6 at 55mph which I think is what the manual recommends. After 2500 miles I'm getting better but I still find that sometimes I'm going into 6 too early. I don't have a tach so I just go by the engine sound and sometimes I have a hard time judging what gear I'm in. I only have a indicator light for 6.

Figure I get better gas mileage by getting into 6th whenever I can. I'm getting 45mpg with mixed driving.

How much did you really ride those other bikes? Not to slam you or anything, but if you've been riding for a while you should be able to "hear" when to shift.

My personal opinion is 55 is too slow for 6th unless your going downgrade. Mine lugs at 55-not good for engine!

I am running a stock 08 RKC and if I go into 6th below 65, there is not much response there. I have read some comments from others with stage 1's that can get into 6th gear at a lower speed. I am hoping to do a SE stage 1 for fathers day. I will then see if there is any difference.

When, I bought my 07 WG the salesman told me to not even think about 6th gear until 70. He was right on. I get some lug at anything lower than that. I have a tendency to wind out all of my gears to the max though.....Daddy likes to "get on it" !

70!!. My Heritage would be screaming at 70 in 5th gear. Maybe they're set up differently.
