Default Let's talk helmets, modulars specifically.

I normally wear a full face helmet - specifically, a GMax G68S in Wakisaki Green and Titanium. I paid about $150 for it, and it has been a pretty good helmet.

I'm thinking modular right now, and right now I'm leaning towards a Shoei Multitec. It's somewhat south of five bills, so I'm not sure whether I'm going to do it or not.

Anybody wear a Shoei Multitec and can comment? What makes the Shoei a $450 helmet versus say a $170 AGV Miglia or the $275 Harley-Davidson modulars?

I've seen helmets that are $700 - $800 and really wonder what about them costs so darn much.

I've got a shoei full face and the harley modular and a harley half helmut.I wear the modular most of the time. Why the price difference?I don't know, but I do know that modulars are not snell approved no matter what the price.I had an agv full face also,I liked it but it wasn't as well finished as the shoei and was louder.

I tried on four or five multitec helmets and I like the fit and finish of the Shoei the best. I also researched multitec helmets and found that the Shoei used metal locking parts while the others used plastic. I waited until the dealership had a big open house sale and got mine for 20% off. I bought the matte black Shoei multitec with an additional dark smoke shield (which only takes about ten seconds to change) and I'm very happy with it.

The Shoei Multitec helmets are DOT approved. I got this "Complies With FMVSS218 (DOT)" from their website.

I could be wrong, but I thought all Shoei helmets are both DOT & Snell approved.

As a rule I have found SNELL helmets cost more most of the time. I wear a 3/4 so not able to say more than that. Good luck.

Greetings,

While Shoei does make a good helmet, a lot of my friends run with the Nolan modular helmet. A little less money, but good fit and finish though. I know they are a little cheaper (around $400), so that's a bonus to.

Right, the snell is a more rigorous test and they won't approve the modulars.

One thing that's in Shoei's favor is that Shoei has a great sealing gasket that eliminates drafts and noise, and that's a big plus in a modular helmet.

Snell is a little different test than DOT, but it may not translate to much difference in the real world. I'm far from an expert but I read somewhere that DOT only can be better in some situations. For me, if I crash, almost any helmet is better than none. Most accidents are at low speeds at intersections, so any helmet that is comfortable and is on my head is the best one.

I've used the Nolan N102 modular helmet but stopped because of the weight of the helmet. The modular helmets are considerably heavier than even the traditional full face helmets. My advice would be to compare weight specs before you buy. A pound difference can be huge on your neck.
