20,000 mile service

If you are experienced go for it. Even my brother who does most all of his own service just told me last night as we were changing the oil in our bikes that he would be taking his bike to the dealer for the 20K because he considers it very critical. They are supposed to check everything including stuff like the neck bearings and adjustment on the forks/front end.
In my case I feel it is well worth the money since I do not know enough about it.
Good luck

you guys must have more money than I do. I can't pay $500 for an oil change and hope they do everything else.

At least on the 09 Touring bikes, the 20,000 service isn't anything special. Change all 3 fluids, inspect a bunch of stuff, lube the steering head (does not call to adjust), change spark plugs... Definately not worth $510 to me.

SUPPOSED TO= is the key words here. After checking to see for yourself you could have done it yourself. Do you really want some kid changing your oil? You know they dont use there Master Mechanic to change your oil or lube your cables, but they sure charge you like they do. My only time at the dealer was the last time. About a quart over full of oil along with a mess. Get a manual and do it your self and know it's done right.

The manual specific to your bike illustrates how to do all of that. On the subject of that 500 plus dollar oil change. To watch a shop spend less than an hour for a souped up oil change and then charge me for several hours of labor pisses me off to no ends. You want to charge me for two or three hours of labor---you better have your fat *** bent over my bike turning a wrench that long. Goes for everything I own. Some work I will farm out but I get an hours work for an hours wages now. Do all my own inspections and oil changes now. I did that once out of laziness and I was not happy with myself

Just like a car dealer, I'll do a 95934 point check for you at every oil change.
Right, they look at nothing, it just a scam to get you in there spend your money thinking you are getting some thing worth while.

I don't consider myself a mechanic by any means, However, By following the manual, I am confident that the 20K service I did 3 days ago on the wifes Deluxe was done correctly. And the shock change done today was also done correctly.
I am fortunate to have a very good wrench for a buddy. He is the one that told me that I COULD do my own work, and I was more than capable of doing so. Anytime I have a question, I call him and he explains it to me so i can do it all myself. Sure I am mechanically inclined and have used tools all my life, but still don't considermyself a mechanic.
The 20K service cost me 55 dollars for all the oils, gaskets, plugs and filter. All the rest is simply following the book on what to check and adjust. By following the list in the manual, and doing one step at a time, turn to the page needed, read it, and follow it as to how to check, inspect, adjust or whatever. I always use a torque wrench, and the book tells you if you need Loctite, and what kind.
Sure doing it this way took me 4 hours, but to me, 4 hours is worth it to save nearly 500.00. Besides, it was raining so I couldn't ride anyway LOL
