Default Heavyweight motorcycle operator's license?

I have been pondering renting while on vacation, and keep comming across the stipulation of holding a 'heavyweight motorcycle operator's license'.

I passed the MSF basic rider class, and was looking for more information on a "heavyweight" license, but I can't seem to find anything at HD Rider's Edge, MSF, or at the State.

Can someone tell me what this is, and how to obtain one?

Thanks,
Kurt

This is all I've found on it....

Requirements: Renter must be 21 years of age or older, have a valid motorcycle operator’s license, possess the skills, knowledge and ability to operate heavyweight motorcycles, and a major credit card.

Some countries have graduated motorcycle licensing. A new licensee isn't licensed to operate a larger bike (they usually go by displacement, IIRC).

In some ways, it's probably smarter than our system. Congratulations, kid, you just squeaked through the BRC - here are the keys to your new 1000cc sportbike.....

Wow...that was a new one for me. A motorcycle license is a motorcycle license in all the states I've ever visited. As with any type bike, familiarity of operation and handling is the key and the license is a formality to operate it on public roads.

I think you also need a helmet ... and an available balance of around $2500.00 available on your Credit Card in case of damage.

Doing a Google search, looks like the "heavyweight" requirement has just been cut and pasted across most of the Harley rental information pages. Also appears to be an "international standard", which tells me that some countries have different levels of MC licenses, and if coming from another country, you would need to have this level to rent a Harley in the states. You'll be fine.

If your drivers license is current and has the motorcycle endorsement on it, what more is there?
