Default Road King Starter

2007 Road King problem. When the ignition and run switch is turned on and starter button pushed - Nothing. This is intermitent but worrysome for trips. A friend had the same problem and replaced a unit on the end of the starter solonoid that allows him to push this unit on the solonoid to engage the starter. Purchased at a non HD shop. Any experience?

as mentioned check your ground.Check to make sure your starter is not loose..check your wires on the ignition switch..heck you better take a good look at all of it.by putting on a start button on the starter may work,it aint fixin the problem..

I had a similar situation on an '03 Ultra Classic. I found out that while installing 2 chrome screws that clamps the throttle side assembly to the handlebars, I pinched a wire to the starter button. After backing the screws out and tucking the wires back out of the way, everything was ok.

Nothing, or a 'click' ??? Some refer to it as the "Click Of Death" (COD)
You're not the first, as you can see.

What you are referring to in your post:

http://www.jpcycles.com/search/produ...=0&results=100

(I just grabbed the first pic, NOT for yours necessarily)

Mounts on the starter, BYPASSES the electical portion of the solenoid. When you 'push' the button, the starter WILL TURN, no matter what position the key is in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The FX we just bought, has it on there, already.

I recommend installing a master disconnect on the ground cable. See above WARNING, starter WILL TURN when you push the solenoid button !!!!
I have seen a good looking custom scoot shove itself off the kick stand when he was pizzing around showing his buds, how it worked, and it was in gear. NOT PRETTY !!!

BUT...........one fix, that SEEMS to work GREAT. Get rid of the headlights coming on with the Ign switch. First position on Ign is Ign and Brake light feed.(You want power to the brake light, for running in states with no headlight law, but you STILL have brake light) Second position is for lights.
99.999999% of the time, NEVER a prob, again.

ALL my scoots are wired in this fashion. ALL voltage goes to solenoid and starter, NONE to lights. You don't need them, til you are ready to 'roll off', anyway.
That's another one of those, "Let's compensate for the idjuts", installations.

Any indy should be able to do it. IF you have any basic knowledge of 12v electrical, YOU CAN DO IT !!!!!
In reality, all you are doing is putting the "lights" feed, on the second terminal, vs both. Rather simplistic, but that's what it is.

Had same exact intermittent problem. Replaced a $5 starter relay and solved the problem.

My son's '07 WG did the same thing about a 100 miles into our last trip together. He pulled the battery cover off, tightened the terminals and it's been fine ever since. Sometimes the simplest solution is the right one.

Read the service bulletin M1231 about the 2007 starters and improper torque on the fasteners. Also, try and wiggle the ignition switch, if it alleviates the issue it could be a faulty ignition switch, had it happen on my 08.
