It's like roll it over and look at the bottom. It's not that big of a thing.

Did you look to see if its from the bolt that holds the forks to the frame? I hear these fall off Sportsters all the time.

OR

Find another Sportster and toss it underneath it. When the girl comes out...... point it out, and see where she puts it.

J/K a pic might help.

This trait never seemed to carry over to anything else I did, so I couldn't really say I had a photographic memory, just with things I worked on.
Mechaniced in a garage for 12 years and was the same way, i had an old pan, i threw everything in it during a tear down, going back together I would dig out the bolts and put them right back where they came out. never gave a thought to it till you just posted that. whats more amazing is i never had left overs like some guys do unless i replaced with new bolts that needed replaced.

To the OP-- don't rule out the possibility that the bolt was there having fallen out or off of something passing by on the road and you just plain backed over it and parked there.

I can't think of many grease covered nuts on a bike-- were the threads shiny inside--should give a clue as to how "fresh" it was.... good luck-- sheesh.....

Had a boss once, that liked to play practical jokes. A few customers were hangin out, and he decided to be funny...

Tossed a few extra bolts in my can when I was in the back. They all got a good laff, I got pissed cuz I knew damned well they weren't any that I had taken out. The boss insisted, and I got even more pissed. The customers left real quick, when they got the hint that I was gonna kick every one of 'ems ***! LOL! Funny now, thinkin back on it, we all laffed later about it, but the boss NEVER did that again!
