harley novice - Main differences between SOFTAIL and DYNA
I took the advice of others and walked away from the used bike that I was looking at.
Went to a couple of dealers this weekend. I sat on several bikes and really like the fit and feel of the BOB and the NIGHT TRAIN
It was suggested by the dealer if all else equal go with the softail. I wanted non biased opinions from others and your thoughts on differences between the two bikes. ie Handling, the rigid mount vs. rubber mount etc. Will one bike be better for a novice harley rider?

Either bike will do you just fine even though Dyna's are chick bikes. Just kiddin'!
The Dyna has a rubber mount engine and has exposed rear shocks. The Softail has a rigid mount counterbalanced engine with hidden shocks. Both ride about the same. Some Softails come with an FL front which is a little beefier but not necessarily better.
My suggestion is to get the bike that feels the best for your and suits the look you are after. When comparing, you need to consider all the add ons to determine the total cost. For example, if you add a sissy bar, windscreen and saddle bags, sometimes the Softail Heritage Classis is the best value.

Also something to consider is that the aftermarket world caters to the softail crowd more than the Dyna. While there's a lot of stuff available for all models, a lot more is available for the softail.

Follow your heart, thats what I'd do.
I was looking at the same two bikes, but my dealer leened me toward the Bob and I couldn't be happier. I love the way the rubber mount engine shakes at idel. And it handle great thu the twisties.

when I bougt my softail I just sat on a dyna and didn't like it
they have since gotten the rack on the dyna out to about the ssame as the softail
the softail has the old school look (hardtail)
also has th eoil bag under the seat you can see it ( old school)
both are good bikes I like the softail 24000 miles so far

I'm just the opposite, don't want my motor jumpin' all over, want it rigid mounted in the frame just like my Panhead and Shovelheads were. Also very happy with the balanced engine. my 2 cents

How do you like to ride is what I would ask. A Dyna has a more responsive steering better in traffic.
As for being a girls bike thats just jealous talk from those that can't keep up.

If you have just one bike consider strongly a Road King. Great all around motorcycle, comes with bags for your stuff, makes a great tourer. Take the windshield off and put a nice one up or badlander type seat and its a bad azz cruiser. I know its the answer to a question you did not ask but I think its worth considering. There is strong reason so many out there have this model. Very convertible/great motorcycle.

It was either the night train or wide glide for me, I chose the night train and have since added the chrome engine package (Need to update picture), dash, fender struts, horn, coil cover, etc. Both dynas and softails are great bikes. The only deciding factor for me was the hidden rear shocks.
