Yes due to import fee HD pushed into to assemble locally. Choice 2 nice Mercedes or one UC in the garage prices wise in India. Now they might be able to move some bikes to middle class instead of just few rich ones.

Reddog, I won't say this no so definitively...Renault, the French car manufacturer started to support a factory in Romania (Eastern Europe) for the production of the 'cheap' Renault types. Under the brand name Dacia they have the quality of a low priced Renault and the prices nearly the half. For low budget car buyers it is one of the most wanted brands here in Europe. Skoda, the Chechaslovakian brand of Volkswagen started as 'B brand' for Volkswagen. Nowadays only people with 'emotions' buy Volkswagen for the full price, because for 80% of the VW price you buy an identical Skoda, which beat VW many times in test of reliability. I won't be surprised that you can buy in a few years a HD from the States for the full price or anywhere else in the world an 'Indian HD' for threequart of the price but with the same quality. In this way HD conquers the whole market, from 'originals' to 'lower priced'. From business view not so stupid.

The story came right off of Harley's website...not like they are trying to hide something. The bikes are still made in the USA, shipped and then assembled in India. This allows HD to avoid the absorbent tariff India slaps them with...smart business. These bikes are being assembled in India to be sold there because of the middle class explosion there. Oh yeah...HD has been doing the same thing in Brazil since 1999.
