We've had some discussions about whether Deer run from or are attracted to pipes and if loud pipes save lives. I'm here to tell you my story.

Yesterday, I was on the exit road from Royce Brook golf course. Beautiful ride up there - Millstone River Road is AWESOME. I'm in the right lane exiting and this big buck lopes onto the road in front of a blue Chevy Blazer. The deer doesn't see the Blazer which is 15 feet from t-boning him. The deer hears my pipes, looks me straight in the eye and shoots across the road as fast as he can.

I am here to tell you - 1) Deer hear pipes. 2) Deer run from loud pipes. 3) Loud pipes save lives!!

Without my pipes, I think it likely the deer would be dead and the blazer would be very banged up.

last weekend im riding through Eisenhower state park about noon i turned off the main road to go through a camping area 2 doe walk right out infront of me of course im just creepin about 10 mph they stop & look right at me & pay no mind to my thunderheader so i rev the engine & they hop off to the side of the road & watch me go by

I had a very similar experience the other night...they heard my bike for sure and bolted

 

I'm not a 'loud pipes save lives' kinda guy but I'll give some credence to the fact that they may help when animals are around. However, isn't it also possible that loud pipes could startle a critter into your path?

 

living in the cornfields of Missouri , i can tell you with out a doubt loud pipes saves lives .. as soon as the critter hears the bike they start looking for it , doesnt matter it it's a deer or coon , coyote . in the dark you can see their eyes and it gives you a chance to slow down or prepare for the encounter .

 

I agree with the deer running away from the loud pipes. I am looking at the premium air horn from HD cause my Ultra SEIIs arent that loud.

I live on the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and drive through it daily......I see deer everyday and we have a herd of 16 that travel through our property and many times sit in my back yard at night. My SEII pipes do cause them to stop and look and usually move away from me as I travel down the road. I have driven this road with stock pipes and SEII's and will never get quiet pipes again. FYI, our town is 11 square miles and two years ago we had 268 reported auto-deer accidents within the city limits in 1 year. The police guess there was another 100 not reported........that's 1 a day in 11 sq mi.

 

How much does an out of state license cost in Ohio? JB

 

I don't know but you better bring a big truck to haul em out with............my friend who lives 12 miles South of me actually videotaped 3 coyotes attack and kill a deer in his back yard about 2-3 weeks ago. The National Park Service told him to feel free to shoot any coyotes on sight because they are now becoming a danger to residents. It's wild kingdom here now with all the overpopulation of deer.
