88" Cam Chain Tensioner Issue?

Just had the hydraulic kit put into my bike at 34k miles. My outer pad looked pretty new and the inner was maybe 25% worn with a little pitting. I was religious with oil changes and never had the pads checked. I said "screw it, they will fail eventually" and just did the swap. Hopefully lots and lots of cheap miles in my future with just fluids, tires, and brakes.
Edit: ha I guess we are rehashing this old thread. Anyway, I've made my contribution to the story.

I think you meant "pissed" and no, not pissed at myself at all for buying my road king. I would have bought it anyway. Like you point out, there are expensive issues with nearly every make/model of vehicle that eventually need repair.

stuck hydraulic cam chain tensioners
hey brothers #scootertrash here listen i just picked up a 2001 road king as a project to get me back in the wind asap as im 62 and my rides are numbered well this rascal was making a profound chatter from what it seemed like the cam chest so i opened her up and sure nuff the cam tensioner was collapsed so i noticed it had the SE upgrade to hydro with cam plate and op the inner was the same way and neither spring was broken but the round part of the plunger was swollen causing it to stick to were you had to pry it out with a screwdriver any idea what is causing this also very little wear on the shoes as if it happened at low miles of the upgrade thanks peace!

Not sue. They eventually upgraded to hydraullic, 2007 in touring bikes, with a different material for the pads. This seems to be a good combination. Many seem to go with spring and different material for pads.
Also comes down to home many miles you put on a year. Putting on 10k, I would want something good, few thousand it probably doesn't matter.
Why that is is sticking I don't know. Maybe someone has experience with that plate. I went gears at 34k on my 01. but the hydro retro kit is probably good way to go. Or just replace ports in yours, again maybe someone experience this.

You can't have both the SE hyd cam tensioner AND the springs so I can't decipher what you really have. I installed the SE cam upgrade years ago when my bike had 40,000 miles. I'm just short of 100,000 now so I musta done a good job! Good luck with your 2001.
