When I lived down in Austin they had a dude hauling way too much *** go over the side of a high flyover to his death. I am always aware of the fact that if something goes wrong, I might end up finding my way to the ground by way of the wall when I'm on one of those. I don't do a whole lot of speeding on those things.
I have family members who point out happenings like these to me. They want me to stop riding. I don't blame them for trying, but I will point out to them that I don't do a lot of speeding, and I don't drink and ride. Those two factors there, plus my experience level being a little more than a raw beginner are raising my particular odds up significantly. Add to that the fact that I'm very cautious and aware, and it will usually knock the wind out of their sails, and reduce them to "well, just be careful".

Knowing how often accidents happen, I am still amazed any of you can begrudge wearing gear as well as taking safety classes. You can try to explain it to me all you want, I'll never get it.

I've never seen or read anyone begrudge the wearing of gear. I do hear and read a lot of g8ys begrudge not wearing it.
