I have no issue with the 5-10mph pass in heavy traffic. Two guys on an H-D and a Victory did that to me recently and being a rider, I gave them room.

Around here, especially on the Southern State and Belt Parkway through Brookly and Queens (and I've heard it takes place in the Bronx and the city as well), you've got kids racing and lane skipping at high speeds. They are coming at you from all sides. You can get them on both sides of you while you're doing 30 or 40 mph on the service road, going 55 or 65 and when you're doing 60 or 70 on the parkway doing 80 or more. You can't get out of the way of an accident yourself without running one of them over. Yes, mostly crotch rockets.

I'd say my opinion on lane skipping comes down to whether it's done reasonably by the "skippers". Most cagers (particularly the non bikers) are too consumed to pay attention to skoots and in most cases in the NYC areas it's gonna be fairly dangerous.

I don't like the sound of it either. Bikers have enough trouble from cagers pulling out in front of us and ramming us from behind at red lights because they're not paying attention. Why would I want to up the ante?

Lane sharing seems to me to be more like "lane scary".

For someone who's never done it,I can see where it would be intimadating. Here in the peoples republic of Kalifornia if you're riding in the metro areas, sooner or later you'll start.I live in a small town surrounded by open country and have almost no traffic concern here but from time to time have to go to LA. or San jose area. One time coming home from LA. on 101 I hit 6 different stop and go situations which would have added prolly 2-3 hours in the 200 miles and an overheated bike.If you're carefull and watchfull it's all good. Most peeps in this state are used to it and will actually move over to give you more room...Russ

I used to lane split or "share" everyday many times. I worked as a motorcycle messenger, and the main goal was to stay out of traffic jams, or keep moving when cars couldn't. We would take court documents to the courthouse in the late hours of the day, or anything else that "had" to get there. I did get pulled over once for splitting too fast. The officer was on a bike and informed me that if I was going more than 5 mph faster than the cars it was too fast. He did not ticket me amazingly enough. I have never been in an accident as a result of splitting. I learned split at a reasonable speed eventually. I try to stay off of the freeway at rush hour if I can, but I usually split lanes to the front of a traffic light if it is red. This way I most often end up on a an empty or near empty road and have less hazards to watch for meaning There are no cars around me. It is like second nature to me, now I have to teach my wife how to split. I am not sure she wants to learn.

I sometimes will split when traffic is nearly stopped and I dont think its dangerous to do. I have been in a cage and had the s8756 scared out of me by a bike outside my window at over 30mph faster that I was going. I know people in cages get pizzed, maybe its cuz they arent with me!!
