Elkview campgrounds off I-90 about 6 miles east bound from Sturgis does not need reservations for tent camping. It is about $24 USD/person/day.
Good shower facilities and a bar and grill on site. A quiet campground. Of course there is motorcycle traffic on I-90 24/7.
No boisterous crowds there. Just well behaved folks like me.
The is a Walmart in Spearfish for your cheap supplies.
I went across Canada in 2011 and went down from Highway 1 before Regina that becomes US 85. The traffic was not bad except in Willitson or whatever the name is. A couple of traffic lights on 85 and your out of town booking down the road. Not many services on it. One small town after Willitson then cross I-94 with some services. Then a long long way to Bellafouche (sp) and I-90 east to Sturgis.
That's my tent and Ultra just passed my son's bike and tent.

There's an on-line book you can buy for about $20 that has everything you need to know about Sturgis. I bought it before I went the first time and it was *well* worth it.
You can find a link for the book on the Sturgis.com web site ...

Like all have said above, we got caught in a hail storm up spearfish canyon, they had to plow the roads in deadwood. If your going for the party then go during the rally but if you want to ride that beautiful country without 100,000 bikes try going the week before. Most venders are set up and the riding is incredible.

I'm looking at hitting Sturgis for the first time this year. Been wanting to go for so long! It's 1200 miles up, so I'm planning 3 days up and 3 back. Lots of great info here! Only thing is, I'll be alone, as I have no one to ride with on the way. I'd take the OL but she can't get off from work long enough.

If your riding there dont ride after dark....that is deer and elk country and you will know when your in the deer gauntlet area as youll see plenty of road kill from being struck by trucks in the night. Plenty of hiway criters in the day time but at least you have a chance to spot them before your trip is....well..done. Plan your road trip so you can park it at dusk and start up again in the morning.
