Default Mean City Cycles Review

Just recently had my seat on my 2010 EG Limited modified by Mean City Cycles and wanted to take a few moments to describe my experience.

I was making a trip from Georgia to Kentucky and decided to swing through Maiden, NC and have my seat done on the spot instead of mailing it.

I made the appointment about a month out and spoke to Lori to reserve the appointment. Had no issues and Lori was extremely nice. I wanted no change in rider position and ordered the double decker memory foam and had considered the heated seat mod and had a few questions about that, which they were also very responsive to emails I had over the next few days. In the end I decided to skip the heated seat mod, basically for two reasons; 1. I prefer the stock look of the stock controller and 2. Cost, it’s $160 for each and would have added an additional $320 to the cost.

MCC is located just outside of downtown Maiden, NC (probably less then ¼ mile) on Main St. Small but very quaint town typical small town. Anyway, drove in and initially spoke with Lori who took all of our information (weight, height and any issues we have with the stock seat). My main issues were butt burn and an area right around my pants seam on the lower back was causing me issues. For my wife, they narrowed it up a bit so it is more comfortable. Alan, made a point to come out an speak with us and thank us for our business. One of the cool things about the shop is there is a window you can watch Alan work on the seats as he molds them into shape.

They told me it would be about 1 ½ hours and my wife and I decided to walk “downtown” and have a bite to eat at a little BBQ joint called Scotties. Just as we were reaching MCC on our way back they were putting the seat back on. We jumped on to check it out and had no issues. We were told it takes about 1000 miles to break the seat in. I noticed an immediate improvement and it has gotten better since. By the way, I mentioned earlier we ordered the double decker, once Alan got the seat apart he noticed I had the better seat pan. Not sure of all the details, but he said HD made two different seat pans in that year and I had what he said was the better one. Anyway, because of this I only needed the single layer memory foam, so when I went to pay, my bill was less then expected (not something you see everyday when buying something for a Harley!) We paid and went on our way.

Later that evening I noticed one issue. I had what felt like a bump pushing out at the bottom of the seat where the seat bottom and back come together. I assumed it would just be something that I would have to get used to over time, however after about 100 miles that evening, I realized it wasn’t going to get better. Fortunately I was staying the night in Hickory, NC and called Lori back and she told me to come in first thing in the morning.

Rolled into MCC at 0830 and Alan apologized for the problem and immediately started working to fix the problem. Because he took a little off the top of the seat to fix the issue I was having with my back pant seam he had to take a bit more off the bottom and basically make the back straight up and down. I offered to pay for the additional work, but Alan wouldn’t take any money. He wanted to make sure we were happy and satisfied.

My wife and I had about another 600 miles left on our trip back to Kentucky and I am extremely satisfied. It just really feels much better and more comfortable., almost like you sort of mold into the seat. I am a MCC fan! However, my wife started having some butt burn after about 100 miles or so that she wasn’t having before the mod. We hope that this is due to the break in period and will see how it goes.

Anyway. I have nothing but good things to say about MCC, Alan and his crew. I am definitely a satisfied customer and would recommend anyone considering having their stock seat modified.

I had Alan work my seat over about 3 weeks ago. I could not have asked for better customer service and work. My seat is everything I wanted. I would reccomend MCC to anyone wanting quality seat mods.

It's good to hear some good feedback. They are near me and I was going to have them modify a seat. BUT, to make a long story short, they told me my stock FLD seat pan was different than the FLDs HD "tall boy" seat pan. The problem being I want the tallboy seat left alone and modify the stock seat, but they want to modify the tallboy seat. I found the seat pans to be identical down to the numbers molded into the pans by the factory.

With that in mind I have been reluctant to use them. Maybe I should contact them again and see if we can get on the same page.

Default MCC seat mod

MCC did a great job on my seat! About 1/2 the price of a new seat. I went with their recommendation for memory foam for both rider and passenger. We put four hours in the seat last weekend and again this weekend. With the stock seat we had SAS (sore **** syndrome) after an hour and a half. Now - no issues at all!!

Great job MCC!

Had my seat done several years ago and it's the best money I ever spent on a mod.

If I ever decide to changes seats (i.e. to one with a backrest), the new seat will go out to MCC before it ever goes on the bike.

Glad to read all these stellar reviews.. I've gone to the dark-side (Vic High-Ball) but I still love this forum and still remain a H-D fan though the fatboy is long gone. One never knows.

But the Vic steel-frame bikes (vegas/high-ball/etc) like about all non-tour-type bikes, have not much better than crap for a stock seat. I'm going to setup an appt with Lori soon. Glad to read all you H-D guys as well as the Vic forum folks, having such great experiences with Allen.

Just in emailing with him briefly, he's definitely a straight up genuine guy. Looking forward to his workmanship as opposed to just ordering a corbin and hoping for the best. Like Max at Ironbags (who I wish would build bags for the Vic steel-frame bikes), I am all for supporting the small-business craftsmen doing their best and supporting our 2-wheel toys.

Keep the shiney side up.. for you guys that still have chrome on your scoots.

Thanks for posting the review. I do not live too far from MCC and have talked to them about doing my seat, a Mustang wide touring solo with nice passenger pillion. Have had the seat on the bike for over 70,000 miles and seems to be getting stiffer on my butt. I could send it in to Mustang for about the same price but can't stand the stock seat so do not want to wait. Also my Mustang has studs that I want to eliminate as have had a couple I needed to replace.Best of luck with your seat and let us know how the break in goes.
