Default Turn Signal Button

Went for a ride yesterday, and after 16 years, the left turn signal button finally gave it up. The upper splined tab on the button broke and won't properly rotate the splined shaft to make the blinker turn on. I order a new button from my dealer, but wonder if anyone has any tips on how to replace the part, at $30, I don't want to break the new one while trying to install it.

Thanks!
