Bro-n-Law's '99 police road king (FLHP) turn signals just got weird. We haven't been working on anything lately - no new parts or mods.
The right turn signal won't go on. After lots of pushing the button, maybe it goes on, but then wont go off. If we shut the bike off then restart it, the right turn signal starts flashing too, and wont' shut off. Sometimes the left turn signal doesn't go on either.
I'm thinking maybe the right turn signal switch is bad, but I don't think this would cause the left signal to act up, so maybe it's the TSM? The '99 doesn't offer bad TSM as DTC option, so no way to check codes for TSM.
Anyone else run into this? Any ideas? Guessing at parts gets expensive quick, so any & all help greatly appreciated.
Id say a bad switch. I would think if the right switch is stuck closed, then the left would not work. You cant have both on at the same time.
Do they both work in flassher mode?
Before you buy a new TSM, try the reset procedure, it worked on my 06 when I had some weird Turn signal problems.
Grab a handful of brake, turn on ignition, turn on left signal and let flash 4 times, turn off. Do the same with the right signal and then the 4 way flashers. When finished turn off ignition and release the brake. Wait 2 min. and start the bike.
had trouble with mine the right turn signal frount wouldn't flash but the back would and the frount left would flash fast when you put the right turn signal was on, turns out that one of the plug-ins on the frount wireing harness was corroded
You guys were right - it was a bad right directional switch.
It was broken in the on position - that's why it just started flashing when the bike was started, wouldn't shut off after a turn, and why the hazards came on if we held the left directional switch in. It was as if someone were holding the right directional button down constantly, and the symptoms make sense if I think of it that way.
