Just an observation for fellow riders. I remember why I bought a Harley the other day after visiting our local dealer, and looking at all the new models. I remember the sound and feeling of the engine when riding my 1st Harley in the 70's, no rubber mounts, and drag pipes . This is what a Harley sounded and felt like. This may start a few flames but as soon as they put rubber mounts on them 1/2 of the appeal went away. for me anyway.

They are just better now. More power, don't have to screw with the choke, more dependable. Better braking and handling. just all around nicer bikes.

Don't get me wrong, I like the pans and shovels but rather ride a newer bike. Todays Harleys are great and still 100% Harley.

You prefer what you prefer, it shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, this is HDForums, where you can be flamed as a "wannabe tough guy" for saying you prefer to ride your bike on a motorcycle trip rather than trailering it.

Improvement is a trade off. The price you pay for "improved starting (EFI) and drive-ability" is an idle that sounds like a big sewing machine on steroids. Lost along with the carb is the Traditional Harley idle. Thank the EPA for progress. My old '72 XLCH and '96 Wideglide were great bikes, in their time. After a '72 XLCH the rubber mounted Dyna was a MAJOR improvement. I'll take the stiffer frame on my '07 SB any day of the week. It all boils down to one thing - ride what you like. The wind in your face is the same, no matter what you are on. You would be amazed at how easy it is to put a CV 40 on and enjoy the best from both worlds.

The old bikes are nice, but they're not as powerful and reliable as the latest ones.

On my older Harleys, something was always breaking, leaking, sputtering, or running like crap. I was afraid to go anywhere for fear of not being able to get home, & remember...this was before cellphones, GPS, roadside assistance, etc. Harleys still sound good, just different. More refined. Like a 454 big block VS. a Lamborghini at WFO.

Not to mention that today's HDs look a whole lot better; they look planned rather than cobbled together from ill-fitting parts.

Funny you should say that- I wasn't going to mention my 16 hour ride back from Daytona yesterday and how bad it would have been on an old shovelhead because I got flamed for saying I rode there last year.

At some point someone will reply and point out that every single person on this thread so far is wrong... That's why it's a forum for opinion. In any case, on the original point. I enjoy the sound of the older ones, without a doubt, but that is all I enjoy more about them.
