Default 88 vs. 95 Big Bore Kit

What's up everybody. I am looking to do some performance upgrades on my 02 Wideglide, and I want to use the 88 for my platform. My question is what horsepower can you get out of an 88 with some mild cams, heads, intake, and carburetor? I am tired of everyone just purchasing the 95 kit. I think the 88 will run just as good. I am looking for 90 ft/lbs of torque and 90 horsepower. Is this possible with an 88, or do I just cookie cut a 95 like the rest of the world? I need the motor to be reliable; able to go 50 miles or 500. ANy information, experience, or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Well, funny enough, I had gear drive cams (cams are Head Quarters HQ-0039G, with S&S gear drive set) installed and my heads ported/polished/new larger valves (1.900/1.625)/new guides/new seals/new springs and ignition module (Head Quarters HQ-6104 - factory programmed for the cams/headwork) done to my engine, but left it at the stock 88". I already had the high-flow air cleaner, carb rejet and high-flow exhaust done last year. I haven't dynoed it yet, but I was told to expect around 90 hp and 90+ ft-lbs. We'll see if that's true in a little while when I will have her dynoed. I can tell you this, she's a real beast now, and when I hit the throttle, she almost thows me off the back, hehehe...

Cheers!

THanks for the good word, CLAMMY!! I am interested in blasting some 95's with my little ole 88!! All I have right now is Stage I and she runs about a 13.00 in the quarter and tops out at about 120mph. I would like her to run a low 12 and top out at about 140!! I love to stretch these things out on the highway, but only in a safe fashion! ANy more 88 success stories? Thanks again!!

CLammy,

How much did all those goodies cost? Is it the same price to just do the big bore kit? Just looking for a ball park amount??

I plan on buying the Mikuni 42 Complete kit with intake along with some hi-po heads, and then I need to choose my cams.

With all the parts/labour it came to around $3500.00 Canadian (around $3000.00 US - parts up here cost a lot more than they do in the US). It would have been another 4 - 500 bucks for the big bore kit.

I still have the stock CV carb, but it's been rejetted. The jetting as done for the stage 1, and since the heads flow a LOT more now, I imagine I'll have to adjust it again for the new changes.

Cheers!

Thanks! I will get a price quote from the local dealer and see what I can save if anything? If it is the same price, then I will probably just go with the 95. Ride safe!

Check in to the 98 inch kit. It's aftermarket, but lots of guys rave about it. If you are going to spend 3 grand, might as well spend 4 and get alot more gain from it. The nice thing about going up to 95/98 is the next upgrade after that will be the stroker crank and you will go to 103 with the 95 jugs or 107(?) with the 98.

I'm sure you can get your 88 to outperform a standard 95, but all things being equal, you will not. IMHO, the 95(98) kits are a relatively inexpensive way to get big performace gains.
