Gee Rich, I don't understand why the new bearings, they never go bad do they??
If memory serves it's an 07 FXDCI, I'm guessing at the year though. Looking forward to seeing the transformation and seeing it in person. Maybe at that point I'll get the opportunity to meet the lovey bride.

fskitch, I believe the two part numbers you're looking at are (57852-02a and 58092-05) differ based on the bike they are used on. I believe one is intended for the Deluxe and the rest are intended for the Fat Boy, Heritage or Slim front ends. I ordered mine from Drag for $100 if I remember correctly.

57852-02A PASSING LAMP BRACKET 1 $93.21 Shipped 1/4/2016
From surdyke along with some other bits. Thinking back on it I wish I'd spent the extra thirty bucks on the deluxe (58092-05) unit. Less spacers and no extra hole on the sides. I think either one would of worked, right?
Thanks

Triple trees and tins arrived from Minnesota today. Getting the dust cap and bearing off the lower tree was fairly easy. Heated with gas stove, destroyed bearing cage and worked a flat blade screw driver with a light hammer slowly working it up the shaft. Dyna dust cap next to the softy damaged dust cap.

Question-Now slide thick large washer down neck shaft, dyna dust cover then dyna bearing gets tapped into place right?
Machine ¼" off underside of top tree --area just where top dust cap sits, in other words take shoulder down? On the side where pinch bolt is looks a touch under ¼" already am I missing anything?
AFMM3 the picture below was posted by you, right? This looks to be the top tree prior to machining a ¼" off the center? Or am I not seeing it correctly-thanks

I may have to do that when I get mine pulled apart, I did the washer and had to modify the tins and light bar to get it all to work together. Guess there's no reason I can't do it right now.

No washer under the bearing on 2006 and newer.
On the newer Dyna, the neck is taller. This creates too much distance between the trees for the tins to fit. This is the reason for removing the raised portion around the top of the neck and removing the .250" from the upper tree. This is all to get the upper and lower trees close enough for the tins to fit. If I was doing it again, I would have seen if .275" could have been removed to give me a little more wiggle room when adjusting. A thin washer could always be added at the top if it were too much.
If you are able to remove the lower bearing in 15 minutes on the first try, everything else will be relatively pain free! You can see in your pictures why the need to replace the dust cap. That Softail cap will not fit into the Dyna neck.
Nice buy on the front end using Craigslist. I forget to look there sometimes myself.

Thanks I understand to try and get .275 inch (7mm) removed from the upper tree. My bike is an '07 and the part I asked where placing a washer under the lower dyna dust cap comes from a quote you gave the "flying tiger bike guy", Crazy. Who's bike is also an '07.
"remove the bearing off the lower tree. You will need to destroy it to do it. The reason you need to do this is because the dust cap under the bearing will not fit into the bottom of the Dyna neck.
Install a flat washer (don't remember size but 1/32" should work)
your Dyna dust cap and bearing (same as the one you just removed)."
As far as pulling the bearing in 15min-I spent a helluva lot more time researching this board for information you guys have posted in the past--well worth the time spent on here!

Sorry for all the questions but the front on your bike
just looks right
. Trying to achieve same "it came from the factory like that look". Right now my bike just looks
off
with windshield removed. I'd like to be able to run with no shield or bags from time to time. May adapt easy brackets, ghost brackets or edge brackets to the BB reproduction hardware as to strip down
quickly
once in awhile.
ackman, your one of the original inspirations to take my bike down this road. Good to see some of the senior members returning here.

I'll echo Fskitch's sentiments regarding the "old guys" still coming around & helping out. I definitely appreciate it. Big thanks to those of y'all who took the time to respond to my PMs.
Muddyape's sick-ass bike is what initially fired me up to do this, tho Robtarra39's bike provided mucho inspiration as well.
I couldn't get the lower bearing off the stem. Heat, hammer, chisel, etc.- no love. Figured I'd just take it to the dealer & have them pull the old bearing & dust shield & install the new, before I screwed anything up. They charged me a whopping $28. Woulda been less, but shop minimum is 3/10ths. lol...
