So how far does it get before you have to rewind it?

Nah! Always something to do when I get home. Currently scratching my head about how to make the gear change lever more secure. I can't seem to get enough hurt on the bolt that supposedly clamps the lever to the shaft, and mostly it's held in place by the small locating screw. Wondering should I try to drill a small hole 50/50 lever and shaft, and scotch key it? (lever might be softer than shaft, and drill will move into lever, missing shaft). Or perhaps drill small hole right thru and put a pin thru it. What do others do?

I'd suggest using a nice high tensile bolt that can take some more torque (unless you've done that !)
Can you show us a picture of the setup ?

It's just the standard setup with a split up the center and a pinch bolt. Always works well when there is a spline, however for some reason they decided a spline wasn't necessary. I think over the years, the shaft has worn a bit undersize making a tight fit just that bit harder. But will follow your suggestion and visit the hardware shop for a high tensile bolt, then tighten it til it is near stripping and see what happens. Might stop it from slowly slipping off the shaft as well.

Hmmm, yes, asking a lot without the splined shaft !
You could probably also add some Loctite 680 , but its rather $$, and may not help.

If you're happy with the position of the lever, you could mark the shaft at the location of the gap.
Remove the shifter and put a dab of weld on the side of the shaft and then shape it with a file.
Will act as a key to stop the shifter from slipping and a tight fit should stop outboard movement as well.
A high tensile bolt is probably the go as Speedzter suggested, and get a plastic chrome cap to cover the head.

Yes, the plastic chrome cap is the go, if I can source one. And a mild Loctite with a small 2 jaw puller for future removal. I'll let you know what happens.
