2017 RGU sidecar adventure
#11
Decided on front end. I am going with HD trike parts. Tree, the 2 inch longer tubes and trike damper. Adds a little cost but will give a set up that keeps bike height the same with car on or off. Really what it amounts to is putting a trike front end on a RGU. Ordered the parts today.

I got a chance to go over a 2014 Ultra Limited that was done with the HD trike front end.
On that one they Fitted an older HD sidecar. The install is prefect and it works amazingly well. No chance to try it without the sidecar owner never removes it. The fitting of that hack to his was a bit more involved with having to make everything.
As of now Not planning to install the Trike front end until we return from our Trip in May.
I would rather have a chance to play with it before taking off on a 3-4,000 mile ride.
Life has taught me doing major mods just before leaving on a trip is not the best way to go.

Wife already ask if we took Our time would could we take both 9 year grandchildren to The ARK in. Only 320 miles. They have rode more than that in the other sidecar in a day.
Just finished putting the one back on the 750 Street. Had it off to make a new mounting bracket. Test ride time.

No Rockie, when I remove my HD sidecar from my Road Glide then put it back on there is no re-aligning necessary.

Set June 9th as the appointment for the HD trike front end to be installed on the 2017 RGU. Sidecar will go on this winter. I just want to get the front end work out of they way.
As for removing and putting hack back on , it is not an issue did it several times on the FB and on the Street. 20 minute job.

The Rake is going to change the way the RGU handles. The whole reason for the rake is to make the steering lighter with the car attached. Any of us that raked a bike years ago just to make it look cool have experienced that. The rake alone will also result in a lowering of the front end. That could also effect how it handles with out the sidecar. By using the front end from a HD trike the tubes are longer. With the longer tubes and the rake bike height is back to where it was before the rake. Also the Using the trike front end the HD Trike Stabilizer is a nice clean install. Some do not see the Stabilizer as necessary, maybe not but I have found it nice to have on others. When you spend this kind of cash on something why short cut $200 ?
Sidecars were once very common. Bikes had purpose beyond just a plaything to ride. That faded over time most forgot all about them including shops and dealers. Lucky for us local HD dealer is still staffed by people that have have been at this a life time. They still know and understanding things beyond a bike that came out of the factory crate. Great part some young tech's are learning from them.
The first time I took the sidecar off one I had made a big deal out of it in my head. But soon figured out it is not that hard and putting it back on resulted in no problems. Even switching it from one bike to the other is easy I have the adjustments marked and know where to put them.
The Twin Classic is going to be a beast that I know.

We made our visit to Hannigan Motorsports. Not only did we get a chance to go over the models that interested us we also had toured the entire operation. They are a balance between a home town shop and experts in the field . We had all our question answered. Also saw some really cool projects they are working on.
The Classic Twin is the one for us. The pictures here are one that was on the floor. Ours will be painted Black hills gold. I am not sure why but pictures it make the back end look a lot bigger than it is. The Heritage car would have also been great except we need more room for Payton in the seating area.
June 9th when we get home from our ride the HD trike front end goes on the RGU. We when then set a date to have the sidecar built.

While it is not finished yet due to a minor issue, my RGU now has a Trike front end on it. Ended up using the tree off a Freewheller. It slightly different than the one on a Tri-Glide. Faring did not have to be moved. However the RGU faring had a minor clearance issue.
The housing for the speedo and Tach touched the inter-faring so it need to be trimmed a bit. Hard to tell how it sit yet seat and tank were off at the time I saw it. It appears the longer tube and the raked tree really do bring the front height back to where it should be.
