That was pretty cool. There is a parrot that lives down the street...he talks to you...if you didn't know better you would think he "understood" you...the owners keep him outside...he's always "chatting" away with whoever comes down the street!

I worked with bird for a few years and I can say some DO understand. Research indicates that the african grey parrot, which that was, can achieve the understanding and vocabulary of a 5 year old child. Dont rush out and buy one though. They bond with one person usualy and MIGHT tolerate other people. This is the kicker, that one person isnt necesarily the one that cares for them or paid for them. They just make an arbitrary choice of who to bond to and once they have everyone else can kinda just give up. Oh yeah and they cost between 800 and 1000 BUCKS!

MUCH MUCH less meat on them than a good ole yard bird! They wouldnt make a meal. Wonderful pets but a tad pricey. Also you would hafta will it to someone. They live 75-80 years. Some of the larger varietys like macaws and cockatoos can live 100.
