Default Bootloader problem - SERT

I trying to program the 159PZ400-A1 calibration file on a 07 Road Glide. The connection and 'get ECM info'works correctly. After waiting the 10 seconds andclick the Program ECM, it always stops at 25% with the message "Unable to install bootloader. Quitting".

I am using a ATEN UC-232A USB to serial adapter. I have tried disabling FIFO and switching from COM 7 to COM 1 but still getting error. This is installed on a HP Notebook running Windows XP. I have tried numerous times with same result. I had the torque smoothing update completed back in December.

The SERT was purchase new from Dealer and has only been used on this bike. I have previously used in Data Mode without problems. This is first time trying Tuning Mode.

I am using version 4.6.2 of the Tuning Software which came on the updated "J" CD.

Any help would be appreciated.

The run switch was on in all my previous attempts.

I resurrected an old laptop with a serial port and installed the tuning software on this. This worked with no errors. I am still curious on what the problem might be with the USB/serial adapter approach. I will try turning off the firewall to see if this has any effect. I am wondering whetherthe problem might be related to "flow control" settings. It is possible to manually set the port configurations on the USB/serial port with the device manager. I am going to try changing this to the "hardware" setting, if turning off the firewall doesn't solve the problem.

Thanks for the ideas.

In followup to the above suggestionsI disabled the firewall and also tried setting flow control to "hardware" and also "Xon/Xoff" but nothing worked.

I decided to use the old laptop for now.

Has anybody tried a PCMCIA serial adapter?

Is your USB/Serial Adapter Driver Vista compatible??????

I have run into a few people that had that issue, when using the 32 bit Vista.....

If you are running 64 bit Vista, it just won't work at all.... Period....

The difference is the "Upgrade" vs. the full Install version /OE Software...

Upgrade is 32 bit, new OS is 64.....

RG:

I've used a Belkin F5U109 adapterwith an older laptop running XP Pro, and have never experienced a failure to upload.

As with any hardware device, always make sure you have the latest drivers from manufacturer's website!

I have tied two different USB/serial adapters. I first tired a Keyspan adapter. The Keyspan had problems with Data Mode and would at time crash the system so for safety sake I didn't even want to attempt Tuning Mode with it. I purchased the Aten adapter and it worked great in Data Mode but had the bootloader error when attempting to program the ECM.

I decided toreturning the Aten adapter and will use the old laptop with the built in serial port for now. It is my understanding that a PCMCIA/serial adapter is the closest thing to abuilt in serial port. Perhaps somebody has some experience with this setup.

WK: Thanks for the reference to the Belkin but before I attempt another USB/serial adapter I want to check out the PCMCIA possibility.

I did install the 159PZ400-A1 calibration (from the "J" cd). I had maxed outthe closed loop bias table. My first test run was 140 miles. I was expected my mpg to drop a little but it was actually higher at 49-50 mpg. This was based on only a 1/2 tank so could be subject to some error. I did think there was less noise andran alot cooler. Need to run in data mode to confirm this. Also seemed like more torque at cruising rpms but acceleration seemed only slightly better at higher rpms.
