Default Ignition for A Shovel....

Hey, I have a 77 Shovel and want to upgrade the ignition to full electronic. I'm gonna use either an Ultima or a Dynatek 2ki. My question is do I use the 5* retard Dot to set the base timing or do I use the Line?

I have used both in my 98 Evo and like how they perform. I just want to upgrade the ignition to something a little more reliable.... Thanks for the help....

well follow the directions for the module you choose.
for the ultima, find tdc compression front cyl and use the mark on the wheel for tdc.
all the timing is now in the hands of the timing cup, if you use the retard, the whole adv scale will be retarded. (one way to reduce ping issues)
the ultima will start in the retard mode and fire both plugs even though it is set for single mode, this insures a easy start, when rpm is up, the processor will determine cyl diff'l and adj spark to your choice (single/dual).

I will use the tdc Mark thanks... I will Need to figure out why it's pinging taking off hot. Doesn't do it when I set the base timing on the 5* retard dot only on tdc. A good friend told me that it's most likely because of the 35* ivc of my Andrews #2 cam @9.0:1 compression. He suggested I replace it with the cam that was originally in there which was an Andrews A2 cam.

well, i run a tad over 10:1 and actually can use 87 fuel. the reason is my dynamic ratio is lower due to over-lap, have to idle 200 more rpm just to get an idle. i too had clutch off issues and the retard timing will help some. my biggest issue is the voes wants to shove as much adv it can so i trashed the voes and run rpm based timing, tremendous help. unless it is very hot ambient or running seasonal fuel, tamed that beast. also, i run retarded cam timing to shove the peaks 500 rpm upscale.

That exactly what the A2 cam will do. Bleed off the static a little more for a lower dynamic.
