I took over a 1982 Harley Davidson xlh1000 sitting dormant for as much as five years (indoor). The original electronic ignition module shot. I was advised to convert using a points assembly kit Part# 32515-85T (Preston Cycle products). It is noted xl's 1970-E78 (&78 ON COVERSION).
Upon installation as I tried to set timing I found that setting front to TDC with the vertical line dead ctr at peep hole, the points cam is in contact with the wider lobe. With past instruction (from internet) it prescribed that the points should only be in contact with the narrower lobe, when front piston is TDC and vertical slot is dead ctr.
I also found the gap adjustment at the peak of the cam can not be adjusted under an estimated .030.
I hope I can get some direction on what I'm playing with. The points fiber which contacts the cam would have to be trimmed down to set my points at .018.
Is this just an incompatible part. it's as if the cam was 180degrees out of phase
